Five Places to use Sisal Carpet in Your Home
For more information about sisal and the sisal industry please see our article sisal carpets.
In the Garage
A sisal carpet is an excellent choice for use in your garage. With their tough texture they will stand up to this semi-outdoor but sheltered use well. The rough texture of a sisal carpet makes it perfect for use in a transitional area between the outside and inside of your home. Walking over sisal carpet as you pass through your garage and into your home will help to remove any debris from your shoes that you might otherwise carry with you into your home. This will not only help to keep your home cleaner, but it will also help to protect the more delicate rugs and carpets inside your home.
In the Attic
Sisal carpet will not trap dust like rugs and carpets made out of many other materials will. The fibers of a sisal carpet are usually softened by the addition of oil when they are processed into yarn for weaving. As a result, while the overall texture of a sisal carpet is rough, the individual strands of the fibers that make up the sisal yarn from which the carpet is woven are hard and smooth. As a result, the surface of a sisal carpet doesn’t give dust anywhere to cling to or become trapped. A simple sweeping or vacuuming is all that is necessary to remove whatever dust has settle of the surface. This makes a sisal carpet a perfect choice for a dusty area such as an attic where carpets made from other materials would quickly become dust traps.
In the Basement
The rough texture of a sisal carpet is perfect for adding traction to smooth concrete basement floors. Rough and tough, sisal carpet won’t break down or suffer degradation from being walk on when in direct contact with a concrete floor. This saves you the trouble and expense of adding carpet padding beneath your sisal carpet as you might need to with carpets made of other, less rugged materials.
In a Sunroom
The feel of a sunroom is mixture of indoors and outdoors. You can contribute to this feel by using sisal carpet in your sunroom. The coarse texture of sisal carpet is rougher than you would normally use indoors but it is perfect for a semi-indoor/semi-outdoor area such as a sun room. Furthermore, while less resistant to moisture than some synthetic materials, natural sisal carpets are better suited to enduring prolonged exposure to the sun, unlike polypropylene rugs which will degrade if left in direct sunlight.
Inside entryways
Why use a doormat when you can use a sisal carpet? The stiff, rough fibers of a sisal carpet are excellent for removing debris from your shoes as you enter your home. These carpets are easy to clean as well. Simply pick them up, take them outside and shake them out or sweep them with a coarse broom. Using sisal carpet as interior doormats will also help your entryways to stand out from the norm and will certainly draw the attention of your guests.
