Outdoor Rug Selection

Selecting an outdoor rug doesn’t have to be an ordeal of indecision and second guessing. With so many different types, materials, colors, shapes, and styles of outdoor rugs available, it can be a bit overwhelming to try to choose the outdoor rug that will best compliment your home’s existing outdoor design plan.

The most often talked about, but probably least important, consideration is brand. It is probably wise to research outdoor rug brands briefly to compile a list a four or five that have a reputation for high quality but beyond this, brand should be the least important of your selection criteria. Basically, you need to consider what your intended use of the outdoor rug is, utilitarian or decorative? This will depend a lot upon where you intend to place it. Then you will want to consider how the style of the rug you choose complements the area you intend to place it in.

Are you looking primarily for a way to add traction to a slippery patio or porch? If your primary purpose is traction, you may want to choose a rougher textured rug. You may also want to consider buying a rug with a rubberized bottom. Alternatively, you may want to consider purchasing a rubberized rug pad to place between you rug and flooring surface. Are you looking to protect your porch, decking or patio surface from the wear and tear of foot traffic? If your primary purpose is protecting your outdoor flooring surface, you may want to choose a heavier, thicker rug. For this purpose a heavier, braided polypropylene rug may be your best choice. Or are you looking for a decorative accent for your garden patio, gazebo, or screen porch? Perhaps you are looking for an outdoor rug to decorate your walkway. For a more decorative rug, it is possible to choose from many different styles of indoor outdoor rugs designed to look very much like an antique Persian rug. Or you may want to choose an outdoor accent rug in a color that will compliment or offer an attractive contrast to the existing colors of your outdoor environment.

With so many outdoor rugs to choose from it is easy to find many that will appeal to you. Just keep your primary purpose for your outdoor rug in mind and finding the right rug to suit your needs will be easy. Take the stress off of yourself by putting your choice of outdoor rug in perspective. If you find that the rug you choose isn’t perfect for the area you bought it for you can always try again and you can probably find somewhere else where it will work just fine. Remember, it’s almost impossible to choose badly when choosing and outdoor rug.
