Outdoor Rugs

When most people think of outdoor rugs, they think of door mats. But Outdoor rugs come in many shapes and sizes and are composed of many different materials. The original outdoor rugs were tribal rugs. Rather than sit on the cold, damp ground, tribesmen (or more accurately tribeswomen) fashioned hand made rugs to cover the ground on which they sat. Truly, these wool rugs were the first indoor outdoor rugs as they were used to cover the ground on which the tribesman had erected his tent as often as they were used outside. Today, outdoor rugs are made of many materials other than wool and they are usually machine made.

Though not yet entirely mainstream, outdoor rugs are beginning to enjoy growing popularity. Though rugs may not come to mind when you think of how you will decorate the outside of your home, more and more people are starting to recognize that outdoor rugs can add as much charm to their walkways and garden spaces as area rugs do in their living and dining rooms. Outdoor rugs are an attractive and relatively inexpensive way to add decoration to your open air porch, covered porch, screen porch, deck, patio, or even yard., With their solid construction and durable materials, Outdoor rugs are also good for entryways where they can serve as a sort of secondary door mat, a rougher surface to help remove debris from your shoes as you transition from the rough and dirty ground outside to the more delicate rugs or hardwood floors inside your home.

An outdoor rug may be made of plastic or plastic like materials as in the case of polypropylene rugs or even that tacky classic the Astroturf outdoor rug. These plastic and plastic like outdoor rugs are impervious to water, rugged and easy to clean. They may not have the beauty of a Persian carpet, but many are quite attractive and they serve well to add traction to entrance walkways. Just be careful in winter. Once they ice over polypropylene rugs are just as slippery as anything else covered in ice. Outdoor rugs made of bamboo may be a good choice for those looking to decorate their patio or deck with a natural rug made of organic material. Bamboo rugs are attractive, exotic and made from one of the toughest and most renewable plants on earth. It has been said that during peak growth a bamboo plant can grow as quickly as the movement of the second hand on a watch! Whichever material you choose and wherever you decide to put them, your outdoor rugs will add functional style to your home.
