Purple Rug
A purple rug is one of those decorative items which is sure to evoke strong opinions. Purple is a beautiful color that harmonizes well with many neutral colors and shades such as white, black, brown, crème, ivory. Purple also blends well with its component colors, blue and red and their many shades as well. While some might take instantly to using purple in their interior design plans and be positively lost without the color, others feel precisely the opposite. What would I do with a purple colored rug, they protest? Why would I ever want to bring such a rug into my home? Well, the odds are good that even those who protest would quickly find that there is a place in their home for a purple rug if they would just take a moment to consider the subject.
Now we should start by recognizing that there are many different styles, shades and designs of purple area rugs. A purple rug need not be a solid colored grape purple centerpiece in your living room or dining room. While a few connoisseurs might feel this is just what they had in mind, this is probably the image that most who would protest the purple rug have in mind.
If we expand our vision of just what a purple rug can be however, we might find ourselves admiring a pale purple rug, one that is almost a grey rug with just a hint of red and blue, which would complement our black couch and glass topped coffee table remarkably well. Or perhaps the purple rug for your home isn’t a solid purple rug at all. What you are looking for is really more of a crème colored rug with a solid crème central field surrounded by a border of intertwined lilacs, the crème of the rug accenting and highlighting the purple of the lilacs to make this floral rug both decorative and subdued. You might even find you like the color so much that you overcome your prejudice against solid purple rugs and go out and buy a solid colored lilac rug for your kitchen or bathroom floor.
Then again perhaps your child really does want a big bright purple rug right in the middle of their room. And why not? I loved purple when I was a kid, and you probably did too. So why not indulge them? It isn’t as if your child’s room is much of a show piece for your guests anyway!
If you already have a purple rug in your home, I am surely indulging myself by preaching to the choir. If, however, you are one of the wayward who cringe at the thought of decorating your home with a purple rug, perhaps now is the time to reconsider. Open your eyes to all that a purple rug can be and I’ll bet you’ll soon see a place for one in your home.
