Shag Rugs for Authentic Seventies Style
When you think of shag rugs you probably think of the nineteen seventies. I know I do. A friend of mine’s house is still decorated, unchanged in over thirty years, in authentic seventies style with floral wall paper, avocado green cabinets and a canary yellow stove. To top it all off, he actually still has orange, yellow and brown intermixed shag rugs on walls of his bathroom. Shaggy rugs for wall decoration! Who ever heard of such a thing!? While shag rugs are much more common for use as floor rugs than they are as wall rugs, and few people today would want to outfit their homes in an honest re-visitation of seventies style, shag rugs can still be used to add a seventies retro flair to homes with a primarily contemporary interior design plan.
Shag rugs are known for their deep pile which makes them very comfortable to walk on, especially when barefoot. The strands of the pile are left loose, giving this style of rug the shaggy appearance for which it is named. While you may not want to carpet your entire living room floor with a shag carpet, a smaller shag rug placed underneath your coffee table may help to conceal any stains that may result from common spills. Many shag rugs produced during the seventies, and contemporary shag rug produced in homage to that style, have a mixture of colors, such as avocado green, brown, yellow and orange. With their blend of different colors, many seventies style shag rugs act as a sort of camouflage for most other colors with which they may become stained in the course of normal use. The uneven, randomly matted and fluffed pile, the rugs shag so to speak, is a further aid in achieving this effect as it breaks up the shape and form of any stain. As the pile of a shag rug is so loose, it easily moves when vacuumed or walked upon and when it does, any stain it may be hiding is broken up as the pile is redistributed about the affected area.
If the traditional mixed color shag rugs of the seventies don’t suit your style or the exiting décor of your home, shag rugs can be purchased in almost any color to suit your tastes. Brown shag rugs are popular and are a good choice for kids area rugs where their deep soft pile can help to cushion falls and their dark color and irregular surface can help to hide stains. In your living room, a shaggy 9×12 area rug may serve as a substitute for wall to wall carpeting. In your bedroom, a shag rug next to the bed may be the perfect place to set your feet in the morning. Wherever you decide to put them, and in whatever colors you choose, shag rugs still have a place in modern homes wherever you want to add a hint, or a helping, of seventies style to your contemporary décor. The odds are good that your shag area rugs will still be in style long after your walkie talkie headsets have gone the way of car phones.
